A Firehall Arts Centre Residency Presentation
Hong Kong Exile
This multi-media dance theatre piece explores the socio-political realities of the Cantonese diaspora, sourcing themes of loss, nostalgia and desire that re-occur with selected works of Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai. Room 2048 is the work from Vancouver-based interdisciplinary supergroup Hong Kong Exile, known for their loud and striking digital aesthetic, tongue-in-cheek humour, and engagement with cultural politics.
Room 2048 — a dream machine — in digital light and smoke, we pursue a history that is not ours. A living past, a dying future, and a stillborn present. We will lie. We will cheat. We will spend thousands of years here.
Room 2048 is the spiritual sequel to Hong Kong Exile’s short-length NINEEIGHT (2014), the company’s most frequently-toured work. NINEEIGHT, created with an identical creative team, was commissioned by New Works and CanAsian Dance, and premiered in Toronto at Dancemakers April 2014.
About the Company
Hong Kong Exile is committed to creating vital and innovative art through collaborative, interdisciplinary investigation. HKX is proud to have developed a reputation as an engaged, rigorous and prolific emerging arts company since the time of its inception. Since 2011, we have created thirteen original works presented in dance, theatre, film/media and New Music Festivals in Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, and Seattle.
Projects over the last two years include an ambitious month-long gallery exhibition, presentations at CanAsian International Dance Festival, Seattle International Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge Festival, and Gateway Pacific Theatre Festival, Uno Festival, Revolver Festival, Fox Cabaret, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, as well as a handful of ongoing collaborative initiatives. Present Hong Kong Exile projects reflect our company’s commitment to exploring multi-media innovation and integration with live performance. Since 2015, members of HKX have been part of the Gold Saucer Studio, an independently run studio, rehearsal, and venue space.
Hong Kong Exile are the Artists-in-Residence at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival until May 2018.
Room 2048 is the culmination of almost two years of research, through partnerships with Gateway Theatre, the Cultch, Anvil Centre, Theatre Replacement/Company 605, The Firehall Arts Centre, New Works, and with the generous support of the BC Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. The work heads on a national tour Fall 2017, including performances at MT Space’s IMPACT Festival in Kitchener and Montreal Arts Interculturels (MAI).
