Vancouver’s annual celebration of every kind of theatre imaginable is back at the Firehall! The Fringe features over 700 performances by artists from around the world at venues across the city and is consistently voted Vancouver’s Best Arts Festival by Georgia Straight readers.
There are seven shows on at the Firehall this year. See it all – an American one-woman folk opera, singing cannibals, a junk orchestra musical, bag ladies, struggling playwrights and a mystery in the heart of Central America. There are several Fringe venues in East Van, including The Cultch, Havana Restaurant on Commercial, that are easy show hopping distance to the Firehall.

A mysterious trunk sits on the peak of a mountain at the end of the universe. Out of the trunk come the clown siblings Victoria, Frank, and Mango. Junk! is a musical with an original score played on original instruments made from junk. Melissa stumbles into a scrapyard and is immersed in a fantastical world where a wheelbarrow bass, a garbage can cello, PVC tubing, and more trash form an orchestra that tickles the imagination while redefining the meaning of junk. Facing writer’s block, an impending deadline, and the impatience of her lead actress, a playwright struggles to finish her manuscript on time. To her shock and surprise, events in her play start to occur in the lead actress’ real life, often with horrific and hilarious consequences. THE LEGEND OF WHITE WOMAN CREEK
