Expanding the Conversation: Reimagining Theatre Creation through Cultural Consultation

Running Time: 1hr approx.

Join The Firehall Arts Centre, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre, and Blackout Arts Society for an illuminating glimpse into the creative process behind Zahida Rahemtulla's powerful new play, "The Frontliners." Director Derek Chan will facilitate thoughtful conversations between playwright Rahemtulla and the Cultural Consultants who helped shape this premiere production.

The panel will explore how the team collaborated to authentically depict the experiences of social workers housing Syrian refugees, the context and continued impact of the Syrian refugee crisis, and how theatre creation can serve as a vehicle for discussing emergent social issues.
This unique collaborative approach brings together individuals with diverse backgrounds—including artists, journalists, and community members with lived experience—to ensure genuine representation in storytelling. Discover how this process is reimagining theatre as a space for expansive dialogue, honoring a variety of perspectives and expertise, and including new voices when creating resonant creative works for social change.

We’re Grateful to Be Here.

The Firehall Arts Centre is located on the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations where they lived and gathered together for thousands of years. Acknowledging their connections to these lands is a significant part of what the Firehall considers when choosing the productions and presentations we undertake and how that work shapes and impacts those around us. We ask our community to reflect on what being present here means to you and those around you.
