Paul Pigat: Create! Eastside Arts Festival

Paul Pigat is an internationally acclaimed roots, blues and jazz guitarist, songwriter and educator based in East Vancouver. He has rocked stages around the world with artists such as Jakob Dylan, Neko Case, James Burton, Albert Lee, Suzie Ungerleider, Michael Kaeshammer and his own acclaimed trio, Cousin Harley. Reminiscent of the great works of Hoyt Axton and Randy Newman, his solo show is stripped down, bluesy, sometimes introspective, sometimes humorous and always entertaining!

Paul’s style is deeply rooted in the playing of Les Paul, Merle Travis, Doc Watson and Mississippi John Hurt, with a modern twist to create a style that is exhilarating in its intensity, at the same time both fluid and precise. His creative use of tone and dynamics is a hallmark of everything he plays. His superb talent as a guitarist is matched by his songwriting and his vocal abilities; a warm baritone equally at home singing flat-out rockers or laid-back Americana/folk songs.

Part of the 2024 Create! Eastside Arts Festival, Paul’s solo show allows a more reflective and insular shade of Pigat’s creativity to come into play. Those with sharp ears will hear snatches of everything from Debussy to Jimmy Rogers blues all thrown into the mix, but — as always — the sounds Pigat creates are all his own. With long gone days of railroad steam trailing out back of his head as he sings of possums in the pot and holes in his heart, this music gets you in the mood to hit the open road.

We’re Grateful to Be Here.

The Firehall Arts Centre is located on the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations where they lived and gathered together for thousands of years. Acknowledging their connections to these lands is a significant part of what the Firehall considers when choosing the productions and presentations we undertake and how that work shapes and impacts those around us. We ask our community to reflect on what being present here means to you and those around you.
